Trip Report: Rake increase at Canterbury Park Not logged in -   Reply

Hello,

After a rained out golf outing in Prior Lake I stopped by Canterbury
Park yesterday after a long hiatus from poker.

I quickly learned of a couple changes. First, the rake on games 8/16
and below went to $5 plus a $1 jackpot drop. It was a little
startling seeing those redbirds going down the chute. They appeared
to try to soften this blow by offering a $.75 per hour rakeback in the
form of comp certificates in their MVP Rewards program.

The players at the 8/16 table I was at noted Canterbury added a $1
jackpot drop to the 15/30 and 30/60 games, there had previously been
no jackpot drop on those tables. I believe they also reported the
15/30 and 30/60 rakes were kept at $4.

Full disclosure, I hit a bad beat jackpot at Canterbury in 2005 so I
got my money back out of the jackpot drop. Still, it was nice to be
able to escape that drop at 15/30.

I could not find any rake information on their website, but there are
some blurbs on the MVP Program. One very nice unadvertised bonus for
poker players is that if you ask nicely the floorpeople will always
validate your valet parking ticket. Saves you $6 when you don't want
to trek in from the parking lot in bad MN weather.

Play at the 8/16 games was very much the same as it always has been.
There were two very juicy 8/16 games going the times I was there. I
spent the afternoon getting run down by horrible players calling any
draw. Frustrating to lose so many at the river, but that makes for
great games. Sure is fun when they miss!

The staff is still excellent and they run games very well. They went
to an electronic board some time ago, that I still don't like. As a
customer looking for games, the whiteboard provided a very quick and
easy visual reference of the location and status of every game in the
place. I think the electronic screens work well for the staff, but
the information players need is nowhere near as accessible.

Still a great place to play but that rake increase is a bummer.

Nice trip report. I have not played at Canterbury Park for about 2
years. Are they still getting the massive crowds on the weekends? The
last few times I was there, I had to wait 3 -4 hours to get a table and I
felt like the floor staff spent too much time filling the 2/4 limit tables
and forgot about the people waiting for the higher limits. Still a very
nice place and I always look forward to playing there when I visit Minn.

There is probably still a wait on weekend evenings, but it is nothing
like it was 2 years ago.

I've played at Canterbury several times and liked how the room was run.
They had a zero tolerance policy toward rude, disruptive players and
excessive profanity. I was so impressed that I asked a shift manager how
they did it. He said that when the poker room opened they brought in some
floor people who had worked in Calif. poker rooms and were sick of the bull
shit players got away with. So, they decided it was going to be different
at Canterbury. He said they found the six or eight biggest loud-mouthed
jerks and kicked their asses out. The other players got the message and
started behaving better and following the rules. I couldn't help thinking
that most of the Atlantic City, LA and Vegas poker rooms should have fired
their semi-useless floor people and brought in these guys.

It's not like $5 was a good deal. When there is no competition there
is always going to be price gouging. $6 is too much. I wouldn't play
there and if I did I would stiff the dealers. I know it isn't their
fault but that's too bad.

How is the rake 5$ on the lower limits but only 4$ on the upper? That
makes no sense and is different from other rooms.
