Making sure you've got the buy-in at the last minute before a poker tournament, and other poker events in the past week.
Lindgren Takes Down $100,000-Buyin Sit-‘n’-Go -- Erick Lindgren claimed one of the richest buy-in events in recent memory, taking down a special event at the Aussie Millions featuring a buy-in of $100,000. Pre-event hilarities ensued when Daniel Negreanu reportedly had to borrow much of the $100K from other players at the Crown Vic, apparently believing that the original “$100,000” figure was a typo. Lindgren claimed a cool $1,000,000 for his triumph in the 18-player event, up from ten players in its debut a year ago.
Atlanta-Area Home Game Busted -- This one picked up very little attention in the poker media, but you can read some of the details of the bust here. 24 people were arrested at a home in the South Hall neighborhood of Gainesville, GA, for “Commercial Gambling” (a.k.a. “running the game”) or “Gambling” (a.k.a. “ditto”). A couple of people were cited for “Criminal Intent to Gamble,” which is apparently the charge used to legally steal the money from people who are present but aren’t actually gambling or running the game. Another week, another Bible-Belt bust.... British Poker Case Challenges “Luck vs. Skill” Gambling Tenet -- Knowledgeable poker sorts know that one of the seminal legal decisions involving poker was the celebrated challenge that Billy Baxter made against the IRS two decades back, proving that poker winnings were a matter of skill rather than chance over the greater term. Now a British case challenges some of the same sort of outmoded legal beliefs as they exist within the canon of UK law. The specifics are a little different, of course, as restaurant/pub owner Derek Kelly challenges the existing 1968 statutes. Kelly was charged with two counts of not having the needed license governing “games of chance” at his Gutshot restaurant, located in London. One fact in Kelly’s favor: He took no fees for running the games.
Moneymaker Millionaire Crowned -- Poker Stars’ massive “Moneymaker Millionaire” promotion wrapped up as a part of Stars’ ongoing Poker Stars Caribbean Adventure. The winner? Canadian student Quillan Nagel, who received his $850,000 cash portion of the first-place prize from title honoree Chris Moneymaker himself. Nagel also won a brand-new Aston Martin DB9, which will presumably not be delivered to his home by Daniel Craig or any other James Bond-playing actor. Did you ever wonder if Q’s special devices could ever pass through modern-day shipping regulations?~~ Read more about Poker Games.Recent Poker Player Stabbed Outside Taj In Atlantic City Consumer Alert On Lead-Filled Poker Chips WSOP Win Awarded, While Atlantic City Nabs Cheats Daniel Negreanu, In Silhouette The Stormy Season of Poker and Online Gambling World Poker Tour Moves to Game Show Network Weekly Poker Net - WSOP Theories and Rumors Weekly Poker Net - Miscommunications About Doyle The Weekly Poker Net - Sumner Wins in Tunica The Weekly Poker Net - Legal News Tools |
