Best Poker Destination of 2006: Oklahoma
Submitted for your approval, a list of poker rooms you should visit, all in one state. Some have a series of games regularly spread, some an occasional tourney.
Sure, everyone knows about going to Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and Southern California to play poker. They are legend. You may even know the wonders of the Connecticut Woods, the sultry beauty of Tunica, Gulfport and Biloxi MS, the southwestern rooms in New Mexico and Arizona, or the many rooms in Washington State. But for the best poker that few know about -- and unbelievable variety -- you have got to get your poker game and bankroll to Oklahoma. Don’t believe me? Think that Oklahoma just consists of farms and oil fields and maybe a tornado or two thrown in for good measure? Well, you’re mistaken. There are more poker rooms in Oklahoma than in Atlantic City, Washington State, Connecticut, New Mexico and Arizona combined. 35 in all. The rooms are scattered roughly around and between Tulsa and Oklahoma City and to the south to the Texas border and east to the Arkansas border. Their size and hours range from small rooms like Sac & Fox that has three tables and only an occasional poker game, to the large poker parlors in the 35-table Cherokee Casino in Catoosa, the new Grand Casino (formerly Baby Grand Casino) in McLoud, the 19-table Cherokee Casino in West Siloam Springs (on the Arkansas border east of Tulsa), the 15-table WinStar Casino in Thackerville, and the 20-table Comanche Casino in Red River (both the WinStar and the Comanche Casinos are in the South on the Texas border). The game in Oklahoma is pretty much $1/$2 blind no limit Texas Holdem, but some of the places regularly spread a $2/$5 and $5/$10 no limit game, and even the occasional pot limit Omaha game. Poker tournaments are ubiquitous and constant. You could probably go from one tournament to another around the state and never be out of action. I’ve provided the latest list of all of the rooms with poker in Oklahoma. It is current as of the writing of this article on December 29, 2006. I’ve included the number of tables they currently have, their city or town, and their phone number. What I suggest you do is give them a call before you go. Their schedule of tournaments and the games they spread change constantly. What accounts for this proliferation of poker parlors in this central state? One local player commented that it was all due to the fact that Oklahoma is a state of gamblers. Oil, natural gas, and farming are all essentially gambling ventures, he pointed out. Plus, since Oklahoma was the last large Indian Territory, and is now filled with thousands of separate pieces of tribal land where casino gambling is legal, it only makes sense that poker rooms flourish there. Here is the complete list of poker rooms in Oklahoma, current as of 12/9/06. The city or town is listed in green CAPS, followed by the name of the casino, its phone number and the number of tables.
